Queen’s Road
On the north shore of Hong Kong Island neighboring Victoria Harbour lies Central, Hong Kong’s primary downtown business district. Lined with skyscrapers, swanky retail stores, global eateries and luxury hotels, the area is the epicenter of Hong Kong. Running through the middle of it all is Queen’s Road, one of the island’s major thoroughfares and home to our current residence at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental.
A fitting address for our start here, Queen’s Road was the first road in Hong Kong, constructed by the British in 1841 during the first year of their 156-year rule. Although only a temporary residence, the Landmark is absolutely magnificent. Every staff member refers to you by name from the lobby to the gym, and let’s not forget John - the most attentive (and witty) doorman. What started as friendly banter has quickly become daily gifts and sage advice. “Don’t forget your umbrella today, Mrs. Huffman!” And “Make sure to go see your favorite apartments again at night!” John is a rockstar and it’s safe to say he’s quickly becoming my first friend in Hong Kong!
One of the best things about living in Central is the area’s infrastructure. The ‘Central Elevated Walkway’ is an extensive footbridge system that connects all of the buildings, making it possible to visit countless offices, restaurants and stores without having to set foot on the ground. Yes, it is as amazing as it sounds. It almost feels as if you’re walking between hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, but with greater density and many more amenities. Finding my way around Central without having to go down to the street level has become a bit of a game. I have to admit, I often find myself walking laps around the same buildings, but I’m hopeful I will learn my way soon enough.
Tonight’s challenge: to find an affordable dinner spot on the elevated walkway system without getting [too] lost. Wish me luck!
